Open Mic Sydney run by Gabrielle Johnson Music brings teen musicians and singer-songwriters out from their bedrooms and onto a live music venue stage once a month at the Red Velvet Room at Coogee Diggers RSL.
WHAT IS AN OPEN MIC?
A professionally run live music show where young musicians take turns to perform on stage to road test an original song or sing one of their favourite covers.
WHO CAN REGISTER FOR OPEN MIC?
Aspiring young musicians, singers or singer-songwriters who can competently perform a song. Open to the public to sign up!
WHERE DOES OPEN MIC TAKE PLACE?
Coogee Diggers Club, 2 Byron Street, Coogee NSW 2034, Australia
HOW FREQUENTLY DO YOU RUN OPEN MIC?
First Sunday of every month 4:30-6:00pm
WHY ATTEND OPEN MIC?
Get the crucial performance experience that music lessons or school hall recitals just don’t provide. You won’t find this opportunity in Sydney very often. Open mic is a place where they can meet like-minded friends and maybe even form a new band. The secret is being regular!
WHO RUNS THIS OPEN MIC?
Gabrielle Johnson is a music educator and advocate for live music who grew up in Coogee. She knows how important it is for young musicians to practice performance skills in a safe and supportive space and one that’s professionally run to get a feel for what it’s like to perform in a live music venue.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
We provide a small stage, sound and lighting and an electric keyboard – you bring the talent and anything else you need to perform your song. Backing tracks are added to our playlist before we start to maximise performance time and we move quickly between the acts so we can have as many performers as possible.
